Poverty in Ecuador has fallen by nine percentage points between December 2006 and December 2011, according to the latest quarterly survey of employment, unemployment and underemployment that made the INEC (National Institute of Statistics and Censuses). This means that in the past five years have risen out of poverty around 930,000 people, as of December 2006, 37.6% of the population was poor and now 28.6%.

The rock-bottom cost of living in Ecuador, where retirees can live comfortably on less than the average U.S. Social Security payment, has seen the country remain firmly at the top of International Living’s annual Global Retirement Index for the third successive year.

The recent opening of Ecuador's newest and longest bridge, represents a significant step towards opening up access to the country's beautiful and underdeveloped northern Pacific coast.
